Hi All,

As mentioned in my previous post, see the link below for further information, this will be the start of me writing a breakdown of each episode of Digimon Tamers and the differences between the Japanese/English/Manga version of this season.

https://www.deviantart.com/hibotancreations/art/Digimon-Tamers-Episodes-Breakdown-876521400

And here we are on to episode 5 of the anime.
I suppose that it'll get easier writing these breakdowns the further I go along, and when the actual plot of Tamers will really start picking up.

I'm not to sure if people are even reading these, but for me it personally doesn't really make a difference since I really need a proper refresher of the series anyway before I'll start working on the comic. It really does help getting into every little detail piece by piece to get the characters just right and to not make them into Gary Stue's and Mary Sue's.
You guys also get some cute art out of it, so I guess it's a win-win situation for all of us :)

I have to admit that even if it takes a while to write these, that I'd rather do that than just copying the episode scripts/ transcripts ( Yes, you can find the transcript of each episode of the English version online, and yes it does help if you don't understand what the characters are saying clear enough or if English isn't your first language )
It makes memorizing important parts easier for me, and referring back to certain parts of the story will be easier too if necessary later on.

It is also handy to have all the information for each episode in one place too, so that's also a plus ( As far as I know this hasn't been done before, do correct me if I'm wrong tho. )

And also as you'll notice I have tried to make the wall of text a little bit more readable and that it'll look a bit nicer in general.
I think that I definitely will go back to the other breakdowns that I have written so far so clean them up a bit, add the separate review for both the English and Japanese version and also to add Konaka's own review as well ( But I guess that I have mentioned this a few times before already ^^;  )

Anyway on to the breakdown.

Digimon Tamers Episode 5: Dream a Little Dream

Japanese title: Kurukkurūn! Kurumon to Asobo!
( Japanese: くるっくるーん!クルモンと遊ぼ! )
( English: Culu Culun! Play with Culumon! )

Japanese air date: April 29, 2001
English air date: September 15, 2001

--Episode breakdown: Japanese version

The episode starts with a small recap with how Henry first met Terriermon and how they later defeated Gorillamon with the Training Gibs card.
This recap concludes with mentioning that Takato felt that he learned more about being a true Tamer by watching the teamwork of Henry and Terriermon working together.

We then start the episode proper in the morning at Takato's school, where all the kids and the teachers find the school grounds completely covered by white paint lines on the ground.

The teacher Nami Asaji, suspects that it could be one of the children at school doing the pranks at night, but she doesn't think that it's one of the children in her class.

During lunch the kids in the class discuss who could be the troublemaker, some think that it's a ghost ( while discussing when the principal saw the dinosaur at school, which was Guilmon ) and they think that it could be a Teke-Teke monster ( A girl who was pranked by other kids fell on the train tracks after a prank has gone to far and was killed by being cut in half from the waist down when the train has run her over, she haunts school grounds at night and kills pranksters with something sharp and makes a teke teke sound when she drags half her body across the ground )
Takato meanwhile overhears this.

Later that day when Takato and Jeri are cleaning the classroom he mentions to her in a joking kind of way what he overheard and that it's probably just a kid pulling pranks even if others mention that it could be a ghost.
Jeri however worriedly turns to him and she tells him that she saw it, Takato asks what she has seen.

She says that one time when she had a stomachache she went to the infirmary to lie down, while alone there she saw some bottles moving on a shelf and while coming closer a small creature flew quickly away.
This caused her to fall down in shock, and while looking up she sees a lot of tiny dirty footprints on the ceiling ( Made by Calumon obviously )

After school we see Takato and Henry walking home and Takato asks him if he believes in ghosts.
He says that he doesn't really.

Then we see Calumon looking at kids playing soccer at the school grounds he sees how much fun they are having and imagines himself playing with them and scoring a goal himself.

Later at night when all the kids already went home, Calumon goes to a nearby shed and tries to open the door but he sees that it is now locked with a padlock.
He manages to break it open with a small rock and then he takes the lining machine and draws scribbles on the school grounds again.
He hopes that the kids will come because of that so that he can play with them, and in the meantime he plays with the soccer ball by himself.

The next Sunday morning Takato takes Guilmon to school and while Guilmon asks why it's alright for him to come with Takato now, Takato tells him that Sunday is a day off and that the school isn't open then.
Guilmon asks why he is going then and Takato says that it's his turn to feed the school rabbits.
They see two teachers standing near the entrance questioning how the paint lines are on the ground again since they locked the shed with a padlock the other day.
Since it was broken in they think that it definitely couldn't have been one of the kids.

While Takato is feeding the rabbits Guilmon starts to sense a Digimon nearby, they try to investigate it and spot a sleeping Calumon.
Takato thinks that he's very cute and tries to grab him, but Calumon keeps jumping away thinking that it's a game.

He takes Calumon along with Guilmon to Guilmon's shed at the park. Henry and Terriermon are there too.
Takato thinks that he came here by following other Digimon, and Henry adds that he then couldn't go back.
Terriermons asks Calumon if that's true and Calumon says that he doesn't know.
Henry proposes to look for a Tamer that can take care of him and Takato says that he knows someone who can.

The duo and Terriermon go to the playground with the Dinosaur clock and they spot Kazu, Kenta and another classmate there playing the Digimon card game.
Takato proposes for Kazu to be Calumon's Tamer since he knows a lot about Digimon, but Henry doubts that he is the right person because of his aggressively offensive play style.
Takato agrees that he might not be the best person for Calumon because of this.
They think who else could be a Tamer for him and Terriermon mentions Suzie, Henry's younger sister.
But when they go see her they dismiss that possibility since she would be too young to understand that Digimon aren't just dolls to play with but sentient creatures.
Henry later suggest that perhaps they could look for a girl their age that could be his Tamer and he asks if Takato knows someone.
He thinks of asking Jeri but is too embarrassed to do so.

Meanwhile at Guilmon's shed Calumon is trying to convince Guilmon to go out and play, but he says that they can't because Takato said so and that he has to protect Calumon since he is the biggest of the two.
Eventually Guilmon relents and asks Calumon to go out and play anyway.

Later that evening the two Tamers and Terriermon are going back to Guilmon's shed since they weren't able to find anyone.
Then we see Calumon and Guilmon at the shed in the school grounds, which is now locked with 3 padlocks.
Calumon is dissapointed that they can't get in but Guilmon tells him not to worry since he'll just dig a tunnel underground to the shed.
They both take the lining machine and end up drawing a hexagram ( which is also Calumon's forehead symbol ) on the ground.
Suddenly the middle of the Hexagram starts to glow and a Digital field starts to appear.

At the same time Takato notices that Guilmon isn't at the shed in the park and worries where he could have gone.
Both Henry and Terriermon think that he went after Calumon that could have escaped, and Takato spots the Digital field from the distance and they run towards it.

At the school grounds a Vilemon realizes and Guilmon comments that since he is small Guilmon is supposed to protect him since he is bigger.
The Vilmon starts to brag that he is strong despite his size, but Guilmon keeps saying that he is just a small Digimon and this starts to upset the Vilemon.
He tried to attack Calumon with his nightmare shock attack and that he'll load both of their data.
Both Calumon and Guilmon try to run away.

The Tamers and Terriermon arrive at the school grounds and enter the Digital field.
Meanwhile Guilmon and Calumon are being chased by the attacking Vilemon, and he starts going after Calumon specifically.
Guilmon attacks back with a Pyro Sphere but the Vilemon evades it by flying to the side.
Takato finds Guilmon and then uses a White wings card, but the Vilemon still manages to avoid his attack.
Henry then uses a High speed plug-in D card making Terriermon faster as a result before Vilemon is able to hit Guilmon and the others with his attack.

Then Rika and Renamon appear and say that they are his opponent now, Vilemon starts attacking them since they look much stronger than the others.
Rika uses an Alias card, so that Vilemon's attack hits Renamon's copy instead of herself, and while the Vilemon is distracted Renamon prepares her Diamond Storm attack finishing him off and loading his data.

Rika says to the others that there is no reason to thank her and that she was just after the Vilemon's data, and Takato says that she's horrible.
He continues that Digimon are living beings and how she could go just after their data.
Rika seems to be slightly shocked by this but counters by saying that Digimon are just Digimon and asks Renamon to leave with her.
She is surprisingly stopped in her tracks by Calumon clutching to her right leg and asks what this is.
Calumon wants to play with her, but Takato yells for her to leave Calumon alone.
Rika and Renamon leave without another word but the situation seemed to have struck a chord with her.

Takato wonders what's up with her and Calumon still wants to play and he runs off.
Takato says that it's to dangerous for him to be on his own but Calumon says that it isn't.
Henry then comments that he never has seen the type of Digimon like Calumon before and that he perhaps doesn't want a partner and Terriermon comments that this is fine the way it is and Takato reluctantly agrees.

The next morning the children and teachers wonder what happened with the school grounds with how damaged it is.
The episode ends with Takato silently asking Henry that they should just go with that a ghost has done it and Henry agrees.

--Episode breakdown: English version

The episode starts in the morning at Takato's school, where all the kids and the teachers find the school grounds completely covered by white paint lines on the ground.
The teacher Nami Asaji doesn't think that it's one of the children in her class, but she wouldn't put it past some of them doing something like that.

During lunch the kids in the class discuss who could be the troublemaker, some think that it's like with alien crop circles
or others think that it was a ghost dinosaur since the principle saw him ( referring to Guilmon ) they say that it has to be a ghost because who else could eat the cafeteria food and not die from it.
Takato meanwhile overhears this.

Later that day when Takato and Jeri are cleaning the classroom he mentions to her jokingly that the kids then mentioned then that it could have been
demons conjured up by last week’s spud balls
Jeri however worriedly turns to him and she says that she saw who has done it, Takato asks what she has seen.
She says that one time when she wasn't feeling well that she went to the infirmary to lie down, while alone there she saw some bottles moving on a shelf.
Thinking that it was a cat she started moving closer, like a lion stalking it's prey ( foreshadowing ), and the small creature flew quickly away.
This caused her to fall down in shock, and while looking up she sees a lot of tiny dirty footprints on the ceiling ( Made by Calumon obviously ) thinking that cat's are unable to walk on ceilings, so that couldn't possibly have been a cat.
She tells Takato that
she was lucky to make it out of there in one piece, and Takato tells her that she's brave.

After school we see Takato and Henry walking home and Takato mentions to him that nobody has
any idea who drew the chalk lines.
Henry mentions that it probably was just a prank and that whoever has done it must be pretty clever.

Then we see Calumon looking at kids playing soccer at the school grounds he sees how much fun they are having and imagines himself playing with them and scoring a goal himself.

Later at night when all the kids already went home, Calumon wonders where the " black and white Digimon must have gone and that it probably was destroyed " ( He is talking about the soccer ball ) and he then goes to a nearby shed and tries to open the door but he sees that it is now locked with a padlock.
He manages to break it open with a small rock and then he takes the lining machine and draws scribbles on the school grounds again.
He hopes that the kids will come because of that so that he can play with them, and in the meantime he plays with the soccer ball by himself.

The next morning Takato takes Guilmon to school and while Guilmon asks why it's alright for him to come with Takato now, Takato tells him that it's the weekend and that the school isn't open then.
Guilmon asks why they are at school then, and Takato responds that no one else will be there.
They see two teachers standing near the entrance discussing how high the budget for chalk will be this year since the schoolground keep getting vandalized.

While Takato is feeding the rabbits and asking Guilmon not to eat them, Guilmon starts to sense a Digimon nearby, they try to investigate it and spot a sleeping Calumon.
Takato tells him not to be afraid and that he just wants to be friends and tries to grab him, but Calumon keeps jumping away thinking that it's a game.

He takes Calumon along with Guilmon to Guilmon's shed at the park. Henry and Terriermon are there too.
Takato wonders where he came from since there wasn't a Digital field when he found him and Henry is amazed that he was out there on his own.
Henry proposes to look for a Tamer for the little guy since it looks like he might need one and Takato says that he knows someone who could do it.
Calumon thinking that the Tamers need to lighten up but that Guilmon on the other hand is great.

The duo and Terriermon go to the playground with the Dinosaur clock and they spot Kazu, Kenta and another classmate there playing the Digimon card game.
Takato proposes for Kazu to be Calumon's Tamer since he knows almost everything about Digimon, but Henry doubts that he would be the right choice because of his aggressive play style in the card game.
Takato agrees that he might not be the best person for Calumon because of this.
They think about who else could be a Tamer for him and Terriermon mentions Suzie, Henry's younger sister.
But when they go see her they dismiss that possibility since she would be too young to understand that Digimon aren't just dolls to play with but sentient creatures.
Henry later suggest that perhaps they could look for a girl their age that could be his Tamer and he asks if Takato knows a girl from his class.
He thinks of asking Jeri but imagines the worst outcome in that situation, and he then says that his imagination is like a curse.

Meanwhile at Guilmon's shed Calumon is trying to convince Guilmon to go out and play, but he says that they can't because Takato said so and that he would become mad if Takto would come back and see that they aren't there.
Eventually Guilmon relents and asks Calumon to go out and play anyway.

Later that evening the two Tamers and Terriermon are going back to Guilmon's shed since they weren't able to find anyone for the whole day, Takato says that they better get back before Guilmon eats the whole park, to which Terriermon jokingly responds that if he would eat Calumon that it would be great since that would solve their problem.

At the same time Takato notices that Guilmon isn't at the shed in the park and worries where he could have gone since he told him like 20 times not to leave.
Terriermon says that it doesn't matter how many times he tells him if he doesn't listen in the first place and Henry says that everything will be fine, Takato then spots the Digital field from the distance and they run towards it.

At the school grounds a Vilemon realizes and Guilmon comments that he wouldn't hurt a tiny thing like him.
The Vilmon starts to brag that he is strong despite his size, but Guilmon keeps saying that he is just a tiny Digimon and this starts to upset the Vilemon.
He tried to attack Calumon with his nightmare shocker attack.

Takato finds Guilmon and then uses a Hyper Wing card, but the Vilemon still manages to avoid his attack.
Henry then uses a Speed card making Terriermon faster as a result before Vilemon is able to hit Guilmon and the others with his attack.

Then Rika and Renamon appear, with her commenting that he's tiny but that a fight's a fight, Vilemon comments that he hates beating up girls but starts attacking them since they insist on fighting him.
Rika uses an Clone card, so that Vilemon's attack hits Renamon's copy instead of herself, and while the Vilemon is distracted Renamon prepares her Diamond Storm attack finishing him off and loading his data.

Rika says to the others that there is no reason to thank her and that she was just after the Vilemon's data, and Takato says that Digimon are living creatures and that she just kills them and Henry seems to agree with Takato.
Rika seems to be slightly shocked by this but counters by saying that Digimon are nothing more than data and asks Renamon to leave with her.
She is surprisingly stopped in her tracks by Calumon clutching to her right leg and asks what this little thing is.
Calumon wants to play with her, but Takato yells for her to not touch Calumon.
Rika and Renamon leave the former saying that she wouldn't waste her time with these googleheads ( referring both to Takato and Henry )

Takato wonders what her deal is and Calumon still wants to play and he runs off.
Takato says that it's to dangerous for him to be on his own but Calumon says that it's dangerous with them too.
Henry then comments that he never has seen a Digimon like Calumon before and that he perhaps doesn't want a Tamer and Terriermon comments how long the Tamer would even survive.
Henry asks Takato if everything is alright, and Takato says yeah.

The next morning the children and teachers wonder what happened with the school grounds with how damaged it is.
The episode ends with Takato silently telling Henry that the other people at school wouldn't even believe them if they told the truth and Henry agrees

--Digimon Tamers Manga breakdown:

The Manga skips the entirety of episode 5 of the anime and skips directly to episode 6 with Vol.1 Chapter 4

--Konaka’s notes for Episode 5:

At the beginning of the project, the name was going to be "Cululumon", but it was changed to Culumon due to copyright reasons.

That's the reason why Calumon sometimes (often) says "Cululu".
By the way, Renamon was originally going to be called "Lunamon".

Round and round! Play with Culumon!
Screenplay: Hiro Masaki Director: Hiroki Shibata Animation Director : Tomoko Ito Art: Yoshito Watanabe

Masaki is in charge of two episodes in a row. There was almost no specific guidelines and it was an episode that featured Calumon, but for some reason it was a ghost story at school that was similar to the second episode.
Directed by Mr. Shibata, the first pitcher of Tamers. Animation director , Tomoko Ito.

The title is also called Culumon.

--Konaka Explaining Episode 5:

One morning at Yodobashi Elementary School.
A squishy line drawn in the schoolyard.
Asaji-sensei then declares an unannounced test.
The students seem to be dissatisfied.
At the time of lunch after that...

Konaka "I wonder if the way of eating school lunch has changed again now. It was eaten with a spork when I was a kid. "
The mystery of Yodo-juku, The students gossip. They wonder if the monster that the principal saw was the "Teke Teke" -Takato calmly overhears this, but when it was pointed out that the monster ate all the bread for lunch- Takato chokes on his milk and it drips from the nose ...

After school, Takato and Jeri are on duty for cleaning. Takato talks to Jeri, who looks like someone that doesn't believe in fake stories and gossip, and he mentions that the school ghost story is a joke.
I saw it, she says.
When my stomach hurt I was sleeping in the school infirmary.
Even though there was no one else, there was a sound coming from the shelfs.
Is anyone there ?
She asks again softly. The inside of the shelf is shaking. She slowly approaches...
A suspicious little shadow...
Suddenly it jumps out of the shelf and runs away. She looks up to check if it's safe.
The ceiling is full of small footprints...

I didn't write the part with the footprints on the ceiling, but I wrote a similar mystery in the live-action " School Ghost Story ". The original draft + ghost role was directed by Hideo Nakata.

Kids playing soccer at the school yard.
Takato asks Henry if he believes in ghosts. Henry does not answer immediately. He is trying to understand what has happened.

The voice of the boy who stands out when the kids are playing soccer is played by Mr. Tamaki voice actor for Kazu.

Peeping from behind a branch.
He imagines playing soccer with the other kids.
Sprinting with a fierce dribble.
Score !
Calumon was dreaming about it, but when the sun went down, everyone is gone.

Calumon walks while saying tick, tick, tick to himself. He doesn't think this was in the script, but it fits perfectly in the moment.
However, today, the physical education teacher put a lock on the door to avoid repeating the mistakes of the previous night. Calumon does not give up here. Destroy the lock with a stone.

He is drawing lines on the ground. Apparently, Calumon thinks that if there is a line, the soccer team will come back.

Next Sunday. Takato goes to school on duty to feed the rabbits at school. He thinks there is no one else, so he brings Guilmon.
However...
The principal and the PE teacher were looking at the school yard in a daze.
Takato still doesn't know what's going on.

Guilmon is a good friend to the rabbits.
However, Guilmon senses the sign of a Digimon.
Takato is also cautious and approaches while swinging with a broom...
Calumon is sleeping beside the ground roller.

Takato puts his hand out to the cute Digimon.
Calumon smiles, but escapes from his hand.
Hmmm, Calumon shakes himself.
Come here!
"Are you playing a game, like tag ?" Takato asks...
No no no no no !

They bring him to Guilmon's Home.
He is seen as immature, like an In-Training or Rookie. Henry wonders if someone can take care of him.
He asks Takato if he knows anyone.
He thinks of someone !
Kazu, who is in a Digimon Card Battle, uses the attack plug-in N twice in a row.
Kenta is here too ? I'm wondering. Kenta looks exactly like my younger brother when he was in elementary school.
Henry points out Kazu's poor strategy. He has no defense in his play.

Takato imagines again.
Boxing-time ( These shots are often used with high-budget MV Germany cameras which are currently used in sports relay) continue to close while orbiting the boxing ring from the ceiling point of view.
This part was drawn with hand-drawn animation.

The 'no guard strategy' in the boxing scene is from Ashita no Joe.
Kazu uses an attack plug-in N card on Calumon.
Then Calumon attacks.
This is a strategy used by Joe Yabuki to counter the attack (from the opposite side) the moment the opponent punches.
Fugya, Guilmon who somehow gives a punch.
Punches are interlaced
He sees the style as being faithful to the original that inspired it.

Calumon lost due to the difference in reach.

Searching for that no guard now brings up shogi tactics. He wonders if viewers of the time even knew Ashita no Joe. He doesn't think Tomoko Kaneda (the voice of Calumon), was familiar with it.

He doesn't remember hearing much about director Ryutaro Nakamura's work with Osamu Dezaki and Akio Sugno before his death, but he was an animator for Madhouse. Both directors have now passed. Ryutaro's direction was highly original, but there were times he felt the influence of Dezaki (such as the three short pans in a row.)

Now back to the main story.
Why is Terriermon mentioning Suzie ? Konaka " I will explain. "
Terriermon may have been eager to avoid being treated like a toy, so he wants Calumon to take his place.
Suzie is playing with dolls.
Takato sees that it doesn't look so bad, but imagines again...
A small child doesn't know the limit of something.
You'll be dressed up all over the place...

Shiuchon is named Suzie in the English version and is quite loved, probably because of Reiko Yoshida's script ( Yoshida wrote a decent amount for Digimon in the early years, including the first 4 movies, various episodes, and has a long career of well loved shows that she was in charge of the writing for. ) Jenrya was also Henry. In short, a Bruce Lee-like English name would probably have been familiar with North American viewers.

What's wrong?
Maybe we should look for girls of the same age. When asked if there is such a girl in his class, Takato imagines...
Miss Katou, but...
She had a terrifying experience the other day...
He can't ask her, Takato's says here.

While Takato and his friends are struggling to find a caretaker for Calumon, Guilmon is staying at his home with Calumon, but Calumon constantly invites him to go out and play. Guilmon also doesn't understand why he shouldn't go out to play... then let's go.
This scene is very beautifully depicted here.
Takato who is on his way to come back. He has bread for Guilmon and the others.

But already at the school...
Sequrity has been tightened with more locks.
Culumon laments over the number of locks at the school, as he can't break into it by himself.
Guilmon digs at the ground with tremendous momentum. If you dig a tunnel, you can get inside. So ...
Calumon is overjoyed . Guilmon is now pushing the line marker machine.

For some reason, it is drawn in a symbol like a magic circle. Then, a digital field erupts from the center.
As an aside, until some time I thought of the Magic Circle used for such magic as a "magic square ." This is clearly a live-action version of " devil-kun " (1966) Ending Song (Opening chant of the Middle East-style melody: Sanae Mizushima) of, " devil-kun called" Takeo Yamashita in the song of the melody, "Maware of hell magic square Because there is a phrase. When I looked up who wrote the lyrics, Shigeru Mizuki + Saburo Hatesaburo...

Takato and his friends are wondering why Guilmon is gone, but when they suddenly see the digital field rising from the school, they hurry.
What appeared... a scary-looking, but small-sized Vilemon. Reminiscent of "Mohawk" from " Gremlins ". Also in terms of size.
Guilmon shreds without realizing Vilemon's pride, and that he will not fight a small Digimon .
The technique called Nightmare Shocker is quite powerful, and the line marker is crushed into data particles.

Calumon desperately tries to run away.
When Guilmon shoots a fireball, for the first time a 'skill call' was yelled. He thought this would be strange in dialogue, while the character was shooting a fireball. This is standard for Digimon, and Toei Animation, and also robot animation in general. Even though it seemed odd, it was something 'promised' in this type of thing, so he accepted it. It made it feel interesting to him, because it felt like it needed it.

Takato and his friends finally arrived at school.
Henry analyzes the Digimon through Terriermon's sight. Vilemon was called the small Child ( Rookie ) demon-type Digimon, but Vilemon is an Adult ( Champion ) level. This was read in error in the Japanese version due to how similair the words are.

Takato slashes the "White Wings" card to support Guilmon. However, Takato hasn't grown enough to make a slash pose, and there is no slash footage of Takato yet.
White Wings gives Guilmon the ability to fly.
The fire ball hits Vilemon directly after soaring.
There are many cartoon like expressions in the battle towards the end of the episode.
However, Vilemon immediately recovers and fights back. Here, Henry shouts to Terriermon. He uses a High Speed plug-in D card. The intonation of Mr. Yamaguchi's "Card Slash" was already completed here.

Terriermon rushes at a tremendous speed-and even though he hits Vilemon, he still tries to attack them.
Terriermon stands protectively in front of Guilmon and the children.

They are all together and Vilemon tries to attack...
Vilemon! Your opponent is...
Rika pointing to Renamon, over here.
Rika, Card Slash ! Alias ! ( That is to make a copy of the Digimon. )

It used to be called a shortcut on a PC and an alias on an old Mac OS , but I don't know what it is now.

Vilemon who is happy to attack Renamon and succeed...
It was the alter ego that you attacked ! The real thing is...
Yes win.

I think that Tamers's final sight of their "enemy" is a good vizualisation without any real rawness ( blood/ guts ) that it's decomposed into data and then scattered.
Renamon loads the data.
I don't mind if you thank me. Rika lied because she just wanted the data.
Takato protests that Digimon are alive but that she just views them as data.
Rika's morals get a little cloudy with those words. It's not that Takato's claim can no longer be understood. However, Digimon are just data...

When she suddenly looks at her feet ...
Calumon !
Takato tells her not to touch Calumon, but Rika has no intention of touching Calumon, who doesn't seem to have much data anyway. She doesn't know the hidden potential of Calumon.
It's a delicate scene, but Rika gently walks away so as not to step on Calumon.

Ah, it was fun!
Did all the events so far have been Calumon's "play"?
They are a little worried, but it's okay to leave him as is. There is no choice but to nod to Terriermon's optimism.
And the next morning, the schoolyard is bussy again. The principal insists, "It's a dinosaur at that time."
Classmates still stick to the school's interpretation of ghost stories . "Teke Teke", " Human Dog ", etc ...
Two people who want to keep this silent for a while.

It's a light episode, but the dialogue between Ruki and Takato at the end mentions something important when you pay attention. Are Digimon living beings? What is the value of life? Anime Digimon are certainly alive. In modern times there are certainly more scenes where a virtual being wonders if it's a living being.
There is no easy answer here, this will advance throughout the series. For example, see 'Grani'...

By the way, "Teke Teke", which is often mentioned in this work, is the name of a modern ghost story that many people may have heard. Since the 90's, the so-called genre of " school ghost stories " has been recognized by the world, but in the first stage, the "Urban Legend" urban legend was first established as a form of "scary story". There is a background that was there.

A former teacher Toru ordinary light Mr., had to collect the local city lore of Miyoko Matsutani work of Mr. et al., But he begins to be published since the early 1990s, in addition to the monograph, as a child reading " school of ghost story " There Poplar begins to be published and the like.

Many would think of the 1995 movie " Gakkou no Kaidan " or the 2000 anime " Gakkou no Kaidan " ( also starring Makoto Tsumura and Fumiko Orikasa ), but the first visualization was in 1994. It is a " ghost story of a school " broadcast locally in Kansai.

The now-defunct Takarazuka Eiga studio has been producing dramas for boys and girls on Kansai TV for many years in the evening.
Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa and his younger brother Kazuya also participated from time to time.
When that frame finally came to an end, Kansai TV producer Seijun Nishihata finally planned to do his own hobby genre, " School Kaidan ." There is only one cool, but Master Medaka Ikeno became a storyteller in the form of a school teacher , making different omnibus episodes each time. I wrote three scenarios, two of which were a duo with Kazuya. It was also during this series that director Kiyoshi Kurosawa declared, "I'll let you know the theory of elementary and junior high school."

The one I wrote is titled "Whispering from Darkness", but it has nothing to do with mythology, it is a ghost story with a little lily element, not a true story, ghost story. The other is a "screaming high school" (completely non-horror) in which three junior high school students, including "Arisu," suddenly fall into "Alice's hole" and walk endlessly. And the other one was "Yokai Teke Teke".

It was an old and small studio, but it was possible to shoot in a full-scale studio. I knew I didn't have the budget, so I poured in my galleries and I tried to sculpt the creatures to create a majestic monster horror. Some people may like that visual, so I won't put the image here.

I wrote about this in detail on the old site, so if you are interested , please click below.

Ikansen The homepage of the early days of the Internet. The image size is small...

It's a work that few people have seen because it's local to Kansai (some of them were released by rental later), but it was Mr. Hiro Masaki , the script of this story, who was watching this .

So I'd like to emphasize that I didn't want this episode to have horror flavor. I'm innocent. Hiro Masaki likes horror, so the episode was put together that way.

Takanori Tsujimoto, who played the role of the main character and director of "Yokai Teke Teke" as a high school student, is currently active as a film director (although there is also a movie director with the same surname and same name).
I completely forgot that my homeroom teacher was "Asanuma-chan".

Takarazuka even after the dissolution of the video Kansai some time, in the summer of specialists was broadcast Le version. Produced by Altamira Pictures, known for Suo's work, I supervise the composition. This frame was directed by Takashi Shimizu for the first time as a commercial work.

--My opinion:

Well that was episode 5, I have to say that this was a fun little episode, especially the ghost mystery part, that just turned out to be Calumon.
We did see Calumon multiple times already so that kind of did spoil the mystery aspect, but I'm suprised at how well the suspense was kept up in the Japanese version when Jeri tells Takato what had happened to her. ( It reminds me a lot of the " Ghost stories in Japan " or " Tales of terror in Tokio " series that each feature a different yokai or some paranormal thing going on, it's an amazing series that isn't available on Youtube anymore unfortuantly, but if you can find it I really recommend giving it a watch. )

I also could have sworn that Jeri had cancer or some illness like that when I watched the series as a kid, but looking at the episodes now I can see why. While the Japanese version flat out stated that she just had a stomachache, the English version on the other hand was very ambigious and didn't mention a reason why she felt sick or why she was in the school infirmery in the first place.
And in hindsight it's interesting why Jeri would have been so scared/ shaken up by the event since we all know her backstory when her mom died and how much of an impression the hospital and docters left on her.
You could even speculate that with the English version the reason her mom died so young could have been due to a terminal illness that perhaps was passed on to Jeri, which is why she felt/ was ill, I even believe that the terminal illness part with her mom was at least implied, because why else would it have been fate/ destiny for her mom to die so young.
Jeri really can't catch a break can she, it makes me all kinds of sad T-T

I'm also suprised that it was episode 5 that Rika starts doubting her crusade to let Renamon kill and load as many Digimon as possible.
Also the balls on the English version to literally say that she is killing them, not defeating or deleting, but literally using the word killing.
That's just epic for a kids show, especially for back in 2001.

However it's also funny that while Takato says that killing Digimon, who are real living beings is wrong, ends up doing exactly the same a few episodes later while trying to be a Tamer like in an RPG style video game.

Anyway that was it for this breakdown, and don't forget if you have any questions feel free to ask.

See ya all next time.
